The Yellow-tailed Oriole has a mostly golden yellow body with a black bib and a yellow tail, while the Orange-backed Troupial features a more extensive orange mantle and lacks a complete black hood.

Look for the yellow tail and black bib of the Yellow-tailed Oriole versus the extensive orange mantle of the Orange-backed Troupial. The Yellow-tailed Oriole's wings have a prominent yellow band, whereas the Orange-backed Troupial has less white in the wings.

The Yellow-tailed Oriole is mostly golden yellow with a black bib, black back, and a yellow rump. Its wings are black with a prominent yellow band, and the tail is yellow from below. In contrast, the Orange-backed Troupial has a more extensive orange-colored mantle and lacks a complete black hood.

Both species are often found near water, but the Yellow-tailed Oriole is distributed from southeastern Mexico to northwestern Peru, while the Orange-backed Troupial is found in the lowlands of northern and western Amazonia, south to Paraguay and northeastern Argentina.
