The Sulphur-rumped Tanager and Black-and-yellow Tanager can be distinguished by their plumage. The Sulphur-rumped Tanager features a distinctive sulphur-yellow rump, while the Black-and-yellow Tanager male is primarily rich yellow with striking black on the eye, wings, mantle, and tail. Females of the Black-and-yellow Tanager are duller, mainly yellow below and green above.

Look for the sulphur-yellow rump on the Sulphur-rumped Tanager. Note the rich yellow and black pattern on male Black-and-yellow Tanagers, and the duller, green-tinged females.
