The White-shouldered Tanager (Loriotus luctuosus) is distinguished by its jet black plumage with prominent white shoulders in males, while the White-lined Tanager (Tachyphonus rufus) males have extensive white underwing coverts visible in flight. Females differ significantly, with the White-shouldered Tanager having an olive-green back and yellow belly, and the White-lined Tanager displaying a rufous brown coloration.
