Common Moorhen vs Watercock

The Common Moorhen and Watercock are both members of the rail family, but they differ significantly in structure and behavior. The Common Moorhen is smaller with a distinctive red bill and frontal shield, while the Watercock is larger and has a more robust build with a longer neck and legs.

Look for the red bill and frontal shield of the Common Moorhen, along with its white flank stripe. The Watercock's larger size, more robust build, and preference for dense vegetation are key differences. Note the Common Moorhen's tail-flicking behavior and vocalizations, which are not shared by the Watercock.

The Watercock is noticeably larger and more robust than the Common Moorhen.

The Common Moorhen has sooty black plumage with browner upperparts, a prominent white flank stripe, and white undertail coverts. In contrast, the Watercock has a duller, more uniform plumage without the striking white markings.

Common Moorhens are often seen flicking their tails while foraging, a behavior not typical of the Watercock. Watercocks are more secretive and often stay hidden in dense vegetation.
