Eastern Marsh Harrier vs Pied Harrier

The Eastern Marsh Harrier and Pied Harrier are both medium-sized raptors found in similar habitats, but they can be distinguished by plumage and flight behavior. The Eastern Marsh Harrier is more robust, with broader wings, while the Pied Harrier is more slender and agile in flight.

Look for the distinctive plumage differences in adult males: black and white for Pied Harrier, pale head and dark wingtips for Eastern Marsh Harrier. Note the flight style: Eastern Marsh Harrier has a slower, more deliberate flight compared to the quicker, more agile flight of the Pied Harrier. Eastern Marsh Harrier is generally larger and more robust than the Pied Harrier.

Adult male Eastern Marsh Harriers have a distinctive pale head and underparts with dark wingtips, while females are brown with a paler head. Pied Harrier males are strikingly black and white, with a black head and upperparts, and white underparts. Females and juveniles of both species can be confusingly similar, but Pied Harrier females have more contrasting facial patterns.

Both species inhabit marshes, wetlands, and open grasslands, but the Eastern Marsh Harrier is more commonly associated with extensive reed beds.

Vocalizations are not a reliable field mark as both species are generally silent outside of the breeding season.
