Malayan Crestless Fireback vs Bornean Crested Fireback

The Malayan Crestless Fireback and Bornean Crested Fireback can be distinguished by the presence of a tufted crest and vivid flame-orange patch on the back of the Bornean Crested Fireback, which the Malayan Crestless Fireback lacks. Both species inhabit dense undergrowth of rainforests, but the Bornean Crested Fireback is more likely to be seen near campsites.

Look for the tufted crest and flame-orange patch on the back of the Bornean Crested Fireback. Note the absence of these features in the Malayan Crestless Fireback. Observe the tail color: buff in the Bornean, absent in the Malayan.

The Bornean Crested Fireback has a tufted crest, electric blue facial skin, and a vivid flame-orange patch on its back, with a large buff tail. In contrast, the Malayan Crestless Fireback lacks these features. Females of the Bornean species also have a crest and blue facial skin, with rich orange chestnut plumage and intricate white scaling towards the belly.

Both species inhabit dense undergrowth of rainforests and second growth, but the Bornean Crested Fireback is noted for sometimes becoming habituated to humans and feeding at the edges of campsites.
