Pin-tailed Whydah vs Yellow-fronted Canary

In short

The Pin-tailed Whydah is easily distinguished by its striking long tail plumes and black-and-white plumage with a red bill, whereas the Yellow-fronted Canary lacks these tail plumes and features a more uniform yellow and green coloration. Both species are found in sub-Saharan Africa, but the Whydah is also introduced in Puerto Rico.

Identification tips

1. Look for the long tail plumes of the Pin-tailed Whydah, absent in the Yellow-fronted Canary. 2. Note the red bill of the Whydah. 3. Observe the black-and-white facial stripes in non-breeding Whydahs, which differ from the Canary's more uniform coloration.
