Red-crowned Woodpecker vs Little Woodpecker

The Red-crowned Woodpecker and Little Woodpecker can be distinguished by their head markings and wing patterns. The Red-crowned Woodpecker lacks the pale supercilium and has less pronounced moustachial lines compared to the Little Woodpecker.

Look for the presence of a pale supercilium and pronounced whitish moustachial line to identify the Little Woodpecker. Check for larger wing-covert spots and scallop-shaped breast bars on the Little Woodpecker, which are not noted in the Red-crowned Woodpecker.

The Red-crowned Woodpecker does not have a pale supercilium and its moustachial line is less marked than the Little Woodpecker's. The Little Woodpecker also features larger wing-covert spots and typically has a scallop-shaped pattern on its breast bars, whereas the Red-crowned Woodpecker's markings are not described in this way.
