Red-legged Honeycreeper vs Black-and-yellow Tanager

The Red-legged Honeycreeper and the Black-and-yellow Tanager are easily distinguished by their color patterns. The honeycreeper is notable for its red legs and vibrant blue plumage in males, while the tanager features a striking combination of rich yellow and black in males. Females of both species are less vivid but differ in coloration, with the honeycreeper being pale green and the tanager showing a mix of yellow and green.

Look for the red legs and blue plumage in male Red-legged Honeycreepers. In contrast, identify male Black-and-yellow Tanagers by their rich yellow and black coloration. Note the pale green females of the honeycreeper versus the yellow and green females of the tanager.

Male Red-legged Honeycreepers have vibrant blue plumage with red legs, whereas male Black-and-yellow Tanagers are rich yellow with black on the eye, wings, mantle, and tail. Female honeycreepers are pale green, while female tanagers are mainly yellow below with green above.

Pairs of Black-and-yellow Tanagers often join mixed-species flocks and are among the first to move on in search of new feeding opportunities.
