Surf Scoter vs Stejneger's Scoter

In short

Surf Scoter and Stejneger's Scoter are both large sea ducks, but the Surf Scoter is distinguished by its unique white patches on the head and multicolored bill in males. Females and immatures of both species can be tricky, but Surf Scoter females have a whitish patch on the nape, unlike Stejneger's.

Identification tips

Size

Plumage

Male Surf Scoters are velvety black with distinctive white patches on the forehead and nape, and a multicolored bill. Female Surf Scoters are dark brown with two indistinct whitish cheek patches and a whitish nape. Stejneger's Scoter males lack the forehead patch and have a more uniform black appearance.

Behaviour

Both species are diving ducks, often seen in coastal waters, diving for food.

Both species inhabit similar coastal and marine environments, often seen in bays and estuaries.
