Varzea Piculet vs Ochre-collared Piculet

The Varzea Piculet and Ochre-collared Piculet can be distinguished by their distinct head patterns and underpart coloration. The Varzea Piculet has a red forecrown in males and a black cap in females, while the Ochre-collared Piculet features an ochre collar and lacks the red forecrown.

Look for the red forecrown in male Varzea Piculets and the ochre collar in Ochre-collared Piculets. Note the dark brown underparts with white tips in Varzea Piculets. Habitat can also be a clue, with Varzea Piculets in varzea forests and Ochre-collared Piculets at lower elevations.

Both species are similar in size, typical of small piculets.
