Velvet Scoter vs Black Scoter

In short

Velvet Scoter and Black Scoter are both sea ducks but can be distinguished by their bill structure and plumage. Velvet Scoter males have a distinct white patch under the eye, while Black Scoter males have a more uniformly black appearance with a bright orange knob at the base of the bill.

Size

Plumage

Male Velvet Scoters have a white patch under the eye and a white wing patch visible in flight, while Black Scoter males are uniformly black with an orange knob on the bill. Female Velvet Scoters are dark brown with a lighter cheek patch, whereas female Black Scoters have a similar dark brown plumage but lack the white wing patch.

Behaviour

Both species are often seen in large flocks during migration and winter, diving for food in coastal waters. Velvet Scoters may form larger flocks than Black Scoters.

Habitat

Both species inhabit coastal waters, but Velvet Scoter is more commonly found in northern Europe and Asia, while Black Scoter is found in North America.

Voice

Black Scoter males are known for their mellow, plaintive whistling, which is more vocal compared to Velvet Scoter.
