Violet Sabrewing vs Stripe-tailed Hummingbird

The Violet Sabrewing and Stripe-tailed Hummingbird can be distinguished by their plumage: the male Violet Sabrewing is deep violet with a dark green rump, while the Stripe-tailed Hummingbird has a more muted color palette. Female Violet Sabrewings are paler green with a light gray underside, contrasting with the Stripe-tailed's more uniform appearance. Both species are found in similar habitats, but their plumage provides the most reliable distinction.

Look for the deep violet plumage of the male Violet Sabrewing and the blue throat of the female. In contrast, the Stripe-tailed Hummingbird lacks these vibrant colors. Observing males at leks can also indicate Violet Sabrewings.

Male Violet Sabrewings are deep violet with a dark green rump, while females are paler green above with a light gray underside and a blue throat. Stripe-tailed Hummingbirds have a more subdued coloration, lacking the deep violet and green contrast seen in the Violet Sabrewing.

Violet Sabrewing males display at communal leks, whereas there is no mention of such behavior for the Stripe-tailed Hummingbird.
